Outdoor kitchen materials that survive the Illawarra coast

Salt air, sun and rain destroy ordinary cabinetry. These are the materials we use for outdoor kitchens near the beach.

3400

An alfresco kitchen in Thirroul or Gerringong faces salt spray, strong UV and driving rain. Indoor materials swell, fade and rust within a couple of years. Building it properly costs a little more at the start and far less over the life of the kitchen.

Cabinetry

Compact laminate is our first choice: it is solid all the way through, waterproof and UV-stable. Marine-grade plywood with a quality exterior finish is a warmer alternative for covered areas.

Benchtops

Porcelain and sintered stone handle heat and sun without fading. Granite is a good natural option. We avoid timber tops in exposed spots unless you are happy to re-oil them regularly.

Hardware

316 marine-grade stainless steel hinges, runners and handles resist corrosion far better than standard hardware. It is the single most important detail near the beach.

Plan the services early

  • Gas or power for the BBQ
  • Water and drainage if you want a sink
  • A dedicated circuit for an outdoor fridge
  • Lighting for evening use

We coordinate these with your trades before the cabinetry is made, so everything lines up on installation day.
