Butler’s pantry ideas for Illawarra homes

What to put in a butler’s pantry, how big it should be, and how to hide it behind the main kitchen.

A butler’s pantry keeps the main kitchen clear by giving the mess somewhere to go. It is now one of the most common requests in the kitchens we design across Wollongong and Dapto.

What goes in it

  • Bench space for the kettle, toaster, coffee machine and mixer
  • Open shelving for everyday food
  • A second sink and dishwasher if space and budget allow
  • Deep drawers for appliances you rarely use
  • A spot for the microwave at a safe height

How big it should be

A galley-style butler’s pantry works from about 1.5 m wide with bench space on one side. Two sides of bench need around 2.1 m. Even a small one makes a big difference.

Hiding the entrance

A cavity sliding door, a pocket door or a full-height door that matches the kitchen cabinetry keeps the pantry out of sight. We draft the opening into the kitchen layout so the doors line up with the rest of the joinery.
